Microsoft Dynamics GP was released December 2, 2014. Any new clients purchasing Dynamics GP will start using version 2015. However, if you are an existing Microsoft Dynamics GP user our advice is that you might not want to upgrade right away.
Why would you wait to upgrade your Dynamics GP system?
According to Dan Saffo, Senior Software Development/Support Specialist at CAL Business Solutions, “Unless there is a feature specific in Dynamics GP 2015 that you want to make use of, you would be better off waiting until probably sometime towards the end of the first quarter of 2015 or after the first service pack of Dynamics GP 2015 has been released before you upgrade.”
Here are a few reasons:
- Sometimes there are issues/bugs with the new release that are resolved with the first service pack released by Microsoft.
- While the major ISV (add on) products should be compatible right away with the new release, there is always a chance that some tool you are using is not yet updated. Waiting a few months gives all the add-on vendors a chance to confirm compatibility.
- Our team has had more experience with the new version and can provide better training and guidance on using the new features. We hear about all of them in advance, but it is different when we actually get in there and work with them for clients.
- You need to confirm that your hardware is compatible. If you just did a hardware upgrade for Dynamics GP 2013 there are very few differences. Except that SQL Server 2008 is no longer supported in Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015. Refer to the Dynamics GP 2015 system specs.
To illustrate this, one point Dan commented on was workflow in Dynamics GP 2015. “In this new version there are a lot of new workflow features. However, looking at the roadmap there is also a Version 2 and a Version 3 of those features coming out. So that’s partly why I wouldn’t want to be an early adopter because they might be fixing some issues that they find as customers start using it. That being said, if you really need to use workflow functionality that would probably be a good reason to upgrade now.”
That being said, it is not a bad idea to put your name on the wait list for a Dynamics GP upgrade now. That way you will be one of the first ones scheduled after the service pack is released.
